Dr. Josephine Malonza

Dr. Josephine Malonza is an architect, urban designer, academic leader, and the founding Dean of the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Rwanda. With a PhD in Architecture from the University of Nairobi and an MSc in Human Settlements from KU Leuven, she has built a strong career at the intersection of design, research, and social impact. Dr. Malonza’s work explores sustainable urban development, gender and mobility, inclusive cities, and community-focused planning.
She leads international research initiatives, including a major VREF-funded project on transport integration in Rwanda and Ghana. Beyond academia, she is a mentor and advocate for women in architecture and the built environment, helping them navigate academic pathways, research excellence, and leadership opportunities. At EHER, she supports young professionals and students in building strong research skills, advancing in STEM fields, and contributing meaningfully to Rwanda’s built environment.
